About the STEM school named after S. Korolev
The concept of creating a branded STEM Brand School (STEM school named after S. Korolev) in the center of Zhytomyr has a very high objective perspective, but its implementation directly depends on overcoming several critical barriers.
Here is a brief analysis of the prospects, strengths of the project and risks based on the material of the article: "Regarding the creation of a branded STEM school in the center of Zhytomyr. Is there a perspective in STEM Brand School?"
The presence of a unique historical brand: Zhytomyr does not need to invent a legend - it is already the birthplace of Serhiy Korolyov. The combination of Korolyov's name with modern STEM education gives the school a powerful marketing start not only in Ukraine, but also at the international level (to attract grants through EU STEM or Horizon Europe, etc).
A powerful existing foundation (R&D and military-tech): The city has a ready-made base: Zhytomyr Polytechnic Institute, Military Institute (ZhVI), ZhDU named after I. Franko, Polesie National University, Zhytomyr Medical Institute. The presence of military technologies and engineering traditions in times of war creates a significant demand for dual-use technologies. The school can become the first link that will prepare personnel for these institutions from childhood.
Readiness to create a cluster: Uniting kindergartens, lyceums, universities and public organizations (such as the NGO RDC "Synergy" and others) in a chain will allow creating a continuous education system. A child who comes to STEM Brand School will have a clear track: school ➡️ laboratory / institute ➡️ work in the high-tech or R&D sector.
Inertia and resistance of the system: The author of the article rightly points to two problems: the conservatism of teachers and the bureaucracy of officials (especially the risk of blocking innovations due to copyright issues or reluctance to implement Big Data and BI systems).
Lack of strong brands in industry: The loss of historical giants («Електровимірювач», «Станки-автомати», «Хімволокно», «Промавтоматика», швейна фабрика) means that the future school will lack large local industrial partners for practice. It is necessary to focus on new private companies and the IT sector.
Lack of a unified marketing strategy: There are some strong elements in Zhytomyr, but they are scattered. For STEM Brand School to take off, it must become the same city superbrand as the "Sonechko" ensemble or the Lyatoshynskyi music school.
Creating a Supervisory Board: Involving representatives of the city/regional authorities (in particular, the secretary of the city council, Ms. Shymanska, who has practical experience in preschool STEM) and business is the only way to overcome bureaucracy. This will provide the project with political and financial support.
Focus on Smart City and analytics: The inclusion of such areas as Big Data Analytics, GIS DSS BI (geoinformation decision support systems) and SCADA in the curriculum will distinguish this school from ordinary robotics circles. It will not be just a "school of designers", but a school of systems analysts and engineers of the future.
International integration from the very beginning: Orientation to the NATO STEM and Horizon Europe programs and similar projects will allow obtaining European equipment and funding, bypassing limited local budgets.
The prospects for the STEM Brand School in Zhytomyr are enormous. The city has an ideal genetic and educational matrix for this. If the initiators (including the Synergy Research Center and partners) manage to unite government, science and business into one ergative cluster, Zhytomyr can really secure the status of the main STEM heart of Ukraine.
